Stress Management
Stress Management is becoming increasingly important, particularly in the workplace environment. Recent studies have shown increasing numbers of people are suffering from work related stress issues leading to increased rates of absence and longer term health problems.
Some degree of stress is normal and is part of everyday life. The sort of stress you feel before taking an important exam, or on your wedding day, or even when your holiday flight takes off, are all normal reactions to these situations. It would be very unusual if you didn't feel a little stressed in these situations. When tackling stress, don't expect that you will never again feel stressed. That's an unrealistic aim that can never be achieved, and will only leave you frustrated in dealing with your stress reduction efforts.
Stress can become a problem if you are under too much pressure in your work or home life, and being over stressed for long periods, can lead to a number of health problems, both physical and psychological. If you are over stressed for any reason, it's important to realise that there is help out there to deal with the situation.
One of the biggest barriers to the relief of stress is knowing where to start. You may know you are stressed, but don't know how to begin tackle the problem or what methods may work for you. If you're looking for stress management tips, one of the best free resources is the internet. Try typing in "stress management" into any search engine and you will find a wealth of information on the subject.
There are also a vast array of other resources available, ranging from self help books, videos and DVD's, relaxation tapes and CD's, meditation and relaxation classes. More expensive stress management training could involve attending stress management seminars and workshops.
Part of the cost of these methods may be offset by your employer. Some enlightened employers arrange events such as stress management workshops, or holding stress relief classes during their staffs normal work time. While other employers are helping their staff deal with stress by paying towards to cost of purchasing self help materials.
Not all these methods will work for everyone. Some people will respond better to working through their stress issues on their own, while other people prefer the support offered by group activities.
If you're not sure which methods may work for you, it may be better to start with the less expensive options such as self help books or audio materials and try these out first before considering any more expensive methods such as stress management seminars or workshops. Which ever path you choose, it may take time to show results. Relaxation methods such as meditation take time to learn, but once mastered, can be very effective in relieving stress.
